Lao PM visits Nam Theun 2 site; construction of power house begins – LHSE holds first board meeting
Prime Minister Bounnhang Vorachit recently visited the Nam Theun 2 construction site for a briefing on the general progress of the project. The Prime Minister was advised that, following completion of preliminary activities such as the important task of unexploded ordnance clearance and upgrading of roads to all-weather surfaces, construction was proceeding as scheduled. Formal work on the power house commenced on 16 th May and about 1 km of the tail race tunnel has now been completed. Construction activities currently involve about 2,000 local people, with employment of an additional 3,000 locals anticipated as construction progresses.
The Lao Holding State Enterprise company (LHSE), which holds the government's 25% share in NTPC, also recently held its first board meeting. The meeting agreed the engaging of personnel for the company and the procurement of office and other equipment. The LHSE board is chaired by the Vice Minister of Finance while other board members include senior representatives from the Ministry of Industry & Handicrafts and the Committee for Planning & Cooperation. The LHSE is located at the Ministry of Industry & Handicrafts.
