Construction of the US$477 million Namtha I hydropower plant project is 86.96 percent completed, Lao Phatthana newspaper reported. The power plant will have a generated capacity of 168 MW with a concession contract of 28 years.

The dam’s two main shareholders are China Southern Grid International with 80 percent and Electricite Du Laos (EDL) with 20 percent. The project, which started in July 2014, is expected to be fnished by 2018 and should provide suffcient electricity to Bokeo province as well as exported to neighbouring countries.
